Three Levels of Presence
This is somehow a sequel to my Valentine's 2010 article. There, I talk about the top three inexpensive ways to make your woman feel special on valentine's day. All those three boils down to being PRESENT to your loved one for you to express your love.
This article now will talk about the levels of presence that we experience in our lives. Presence which keeps the bond together.
Physical presence is the most basic. What brought us to each other's arms started commonly from physical attraction, hence physical presence. From there we nurture our feelings every step of the way. We express our love through touch, hugs and kisses. We feel secured knowing that somebody is just right beside us or right behind us ready to catch us or pick us up when we fall. We need this kind of presence for the mere fact that no one can live alone. It is in the physical presence that we can carry out what we want to and it is in the physical presence that we can feel and experience the things which our thoughts would like to express.
Emotional presence is equally important. Here, you may not be physically present but your thought and being are well conveyed to the other person for the latter to feel the surreal you. This kind of presence patches up the gaps when physical presence is impossible. It is through this kind of presence that one is assured, even wihtout seeing the person, that he/she is just around. It creates a higher level of emotional secuirty knowing that someone cares and is thinking of us though not present pyscially. The surreality of such creates a much stronger bond as it can withstand the trials. It is grounded on two very strong foundations - LOVE and TRUST. Either of the two absent can make this level of presence fledgling.
The third and the highest kind of presence is spiritual presence. Seldom that man can achieve this. We can just easily say "I'm with you in spirit...", but whether is is true or not, it would be up to the one saying it. Only one can truly give justice to this kind of presence - our Omnipotent God. Seeing all of us every millisecond of the day, He can touch us with His all-encompassing love. No ordinary man can ever do such.
Of these three levels of presence, the first two belongs and is workable by humans like us. Neither of which is far important than the other. It should work together. If physical presence cannot be carried out, by all means, emotional presence can be resorted to, to fill the gap. Doing such, a long and lasting bond is surely achieved.

Valentine's 2010
This article speaks about the different points of view between husbands and wives on the occasion of valentine's day. However, as the author and being a woman, this article may tilt more on the woman's point of view. You may all agree or disagree. It's a matter of opinion and experience.
On this day, they call the day of the hearts, many women including the author, would like to believe that it is the day when she feels more special. It is also the day when she may confirm that she is still loved and cared for. It's a day of reassurance, especially for married women.
One woman I know listed all the things that her man can do, inexpensively, to make her feel more special and well loved on this day of hearts.
First on the list is an inexpensive NOTE. A simple note, written by her man and posted on the fridge door or anywhere else around the house would surely bring a smile on her face. Even if the note is just written on a simple post-it paper, it will be cherished for sure. Mind you guys, women would surely keep in a safe and secret place.
Second, a simple WALK BY THE BEACH watching either the sunrise or the sunset is such a romantic treat. It will be treasured in her heart until she gets old and could no longer remember anything. For sure that feeling would remain in her heart.
Third, a GOOD TALK with her man would matter a lot. Keeping the communication lines open is a big deal for women. It would be a treasured moment to remember a day that both of you had a good laugh, a good talk or even if both of you cried for certain reasons other than marital/partner problems. Such us when both of you watch a good movie which might touch your hearts and bring you both to tears. Such moment will be remembered.
These are the top three inexpensive ways to express and reaffirm your love to your partner. Again this is on the point of view of a woman.
Now we go to the men's point of view. I've known of a man who have never done any surprises to her girls before. However lately, he learned the art of surprising his woman. Men at times work and plan at their own pace. They at times would not care of the time or good timing. As soon as they can get their plans done, then that's it.
Men I think, due to their chivalry within, would impressed their women with precious gifts. Of course, women would appreciate it. They want to give jewelry, expensive gifts, bring their women to good restaurants and all that. Again, all these are surely appreciated by women. But just a piece of advice, when all these expensive ways of expressing one's love cannot be carried out at times, go back to the basics, the top three ways listed above. You'll surely be safe.
On a personal note, this year's valentine's is quite extraordinary. There were hitches somewhere but love found its own way of expressing itself. The three red roses and a big heart-shaped balloon given beyond the hours of valentine's day were yet sweet and reassuring. Thank you for the effort and the thought that went with it. I love you.

14th Wedding Anniversary
As I write this article, it is yet half of the day of our 14th wedding anniversary. I rushed to write down the things that transpired to savor the moment.
Few days before our anniversary, I was already contemplating on what gift to give my hubby. I thought of coming up with a personally-made anniversary card so I can express everything I want. I won't be constrained with the space provided for by commercial cards. Of course, if there is a card, there must be an envelop for it. These I decided to make on my own.
So the day before our anniversary, I got busy doing my stuff. This is one of my favorite pass time - art works. First, I managed to write down the contents of my card. I wish to share it here, but NO, it has to be read only by the person to whom it is addressed - my husband. Then I came to the cover part. I bought several butterfly stickers and letter stickers, all too colorful to go with the occasion. I felt, as I was dong it, that I was yet on my teenage years, but mature enough to dig out my inner feelings and put it into writing. I made use of some stocked specialty paper and a photograph of us way back 14 years ago, and voila...my anniversary card is done.
Now, it has to come with an envelop of its size. I manage to cut out two bond papers, cut it to the design I deemed fitting for my card. As I sealed my card inside the envelop, I thought of buying a little something that will go with. I headed to the nearest mall. Luckily, I think that red polo shirt was really meant for him, as it was hanged far back but yet I noticed it and really did met my taste. In thirty minutes, I was back in the office, putting my stuff inside a ready made paper bag.
Heading home, I was excited to surprise my husband when he goes home from work at 1 a.m.. But to my surprise, he was already at home, doing the dinner. It was his day off. Nevertheless, without doing anymore the planned surprises, I followed him as he entered the room and gave my gift to him. I was happy looking at him donning the red polo shirt in front of the full length mirror. I had a smile on my face as it fitted to a tee to him. At this time, it was yet 8 o'clock or four hours before our wedding anniversary. But I felt satisfied as I have done my plans.
The next day, our anniversary day, I treated it as an ordinary day. Not expecting for anything. By 11:00 a.m., I got a text message from my hubby telling me that he is up for a lunch date for us. It was sumptuous. He had it in one of the key restaurants in the city, where the best lechon kawali is served. It's his and mines favorite, with knicker bucker to finish it up to a bloat....haha. On the seat was a present for me. An office suit placed inside a red-colored bag. Beautiful... and I saw a hint of the price....hahaha...he didn't notice it....
After which, we went back to office to finish some pending office works. It was a simple celebration though, almost common, but it hit me. The effort is still there. The fire is still there. The love is still there.
At 14 years as a couple, we don't feel it that way. We don't feel that it was already 14 years ago. For me, it seemed like just yesterday when we had our son. But his already 13 years old. It's just a matter of keeping the love alive. Happy Anniversary Pang!

Christmas!!!
It's Christmas time again. Another year is about to end and a new year to start. Much have been done, but more is yet to come.
This year indeed is real heavy for me. It is on this year that I hurdled a life-changing examination - the Philippine Bar Examination. Good or bad, surely the results by March next year would really create a big impact in my life. It may totally turn my life to a complete 360-degrees or will make my life as is. Looking forward to that day brings shivers to my veins. It was really an extraordinary examination.
Now that December has come, I am midway to the waiting period. It is my way of consoling myself by thinking more of Christmas than the examination. By third week of this month, I'm heading home. To the place where I grew up. To the place where all my beautiful childhood memories are stuck. When I'm home, it feels heaven. I will be the real me. The youngest-of-the-brood attitude will surely come out. I can cuddle with my mother, sleep with her, tell a lot of stories to her until the wee hours of the morning.
I don't look forward to gifts every Christmas, as it is me who'll be the one to give out and the feeling is great. Seeing your nieces and nephews happy with what they receive is such an incomparable joy. these are some of the simple things that would bring life to my grueling life. But I'm not complaining, in fact, I love my job where I am into. It's full of challenges. Not a single day would be a dull day. Yet, the break of Christmas is a welcome respite to an all-academic and legal life.
I won't end up the year with promises I couldn't keep. I will just make sure that how I worked hard this year will be doubled next year. How I persevered this year will be twice more next year. Taking life one day at a time would help me avoid stress and enjoy each and every day that God had given me. And this for sure I share to all the people I'll meet everyday through a SMILE.
MERRY CHRISTMAS ONE AND ALL!

Mediation: Its Ups and Downs
A couple of years ago, I had the opportunity to apply and be accepted as one of Zamboanga City's accredited mediators of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, under the auspices of the Philippine Judicial Academy or PHILJA.
To get accredited, we underwent series of seminars and trainings. After being accredited, we were out to serve the public, finding a win-win option for all their legal problems. Through the Supreme Court's initiative, the Mediation Process has been incorporated in the pre-trial stage of any civil case and some criminal cases. The program dubbed as "court-annexed mediation" makes it mandatory for parties to appear in the mediation proceedings, although agreeing or compromising is voluntary.
Three years since I've been accredited, I have encountered quite a number of interesting cases. Some are trivial, some are really substantial in merits. Though we are not to tackle the merits of the case in the mediation proceedings, yet at times, knowledge of the law would help in the settlement of the case. You can open the eyes of both parties to the pros and cons of their case and the pros and cons of entering into a compromise agreement.
As the slogan says, "Sa mediation, walang talo, lahat panalo." Truly it is. When parties come to agree on how their case be settled, it's a feeling of relief on my part and sense of self worth as I am able to help parties settle their disputes. In court, once the case is decided, for sure one will go out happy, the other party is sad or even mad and would be contemplating on making an appeal. In mediation, after a successful proceeding, both parties will come out victorious, as their needs were all addressed. They could even save money as it would shorten the court proceedings.
On the negative side, when the parties I'm attending to are bent on pursuing their case in court, I would feel sad for them, especially if the reason behind it is just their PRIDE. This happens a number of times. No matter how I explain the benefits of compromising their case, still parties are hardened and has closed their minds to seeing the progress of their case in court. I wouldn't feel the same if either of the party is uncooperative or unreasonable. At least the other cooperating party can seek his/her most needed redress for his claims in court. But if its only their pride that fuels them to continue their case, even if they will be subjected to debts to pay their lawyers, I would be totally disheartened. But what can I do. As mediator, I am just their to help and guide them on what best option they have. If they won't accept any of it, then by all means, I would return the case back to court.
One of the many unhappy experiences I have had just happened this morning. Parties involved were just family members and the case is a simple case of "Slight Physical Injuries." The crux of the case was simple and could be easily mediated, but mediation failed. The case was returned back to court. The reason: PRIDE.
According to the Complainant, "Never mind Ma'am, I have initiated the case in court, I'll finish it in court." Of course I didn't surrender easily. I tried to toggle with the amount she demanded. She was demanding 25-thousand pesos as replacement of her hearing aid which according to her was destroyed by the accused during the incident complained of. The Accused on the other hand defended that it wasn't him who hit her, in fact, he was just their to help the son of the Complainant who was then mauled. The accused has no worked and had just suffered the painful loss of his wife and child. He admitted that he really cannot afford the amount asked of. I tried to arrange for an installment payment, but the Complainant would not accept without a down payment of P 7,000.00. Again, this amount is hefty, as far as the Accused's is concerned. With no employment or work at all, where can he get the money. Complainant said, well, if he (accused) cannot pay, I'd rather see him in jail and I would be happy to see that, then I can say that I have revenged.
Sad scenario. I have settled many cases involving much bigger amount and much lenient mode of payment. Many of us nowadays really is struggling financially. If only we can be considerate. As to the case, you would feel disheartened because this is not the only case that the Complainant filed. She filed cases for anybody, even her son, who committed simple atrocities against her. Can't we just forgive and forget if the misdemeanor committed is not that serious and the cause we are fighting for is almost worthless. Life of a person is more important than pride.
That's the downside of a mediator, but I just have to take it and look forward to better parties in a case next time.

Shalani, A Fresh Touch in the Variety Show World...
I am not really a variety show fan of Philippine Television for several reasons. Primarily, I hated how many of the hosts sound. WHY DO THEY SHOUT? WHY DO THEY HAVE TO SPEAK ALTOGETHER that it breaks my eardrums. Because they deliver their lines together, none would be understood and altogether is ANNOYING.
Another quite disturbing reason, is their manner of delivering their lines. They can't even perfect their reading. They stammer here and there. Can't they give justice to the lines they deliver. It's only a matter of one or two liner spiels, yet they stammer, or worse, they don't know when to come in.
However, there are a handful of exceptions. I appreciate a few local television hosts such as Kris Aquino, Toni Gonzaga and Boy Abunda, to name a few. You could really feel the effort they poured in. They sound prepared and if ever they'll commit flaws, you will not notice it at all as they know exactly how to immediately cope up with it or camouflage it. They are alert and observant while hosting. They do not depend totally on their scripts. They can inject impromptu comments or questions based on what is actually happening on their shows. When anything falters, they know how to react. These are qualities of a good host.
Just last Monday, while I was scanning the television channels, I accidentally tuned in to TV 5 when I caught a glimpse of a very soft-spoken lady - Shalani Soledad. Who would not know her. I was surprised what she was doing there. It's totally not her type to be in such a show - or so I thought. It was her maiden show, so I observed how she delivers her lines and the total package.
You could really sense her nervousness but she was able to pull it through with grace. She doesn't shout her lines at all to keep the audience alive. Because of that, even Willie, the primary host, mellowed which brought a certain touch of solemnity or finesse, if I may call it, but not boring. The excitement was still there, the audience were still ecstatic. Every time Shalani talks, everyone will be put to a stop and would really listen intently. This happens effortlessly. She does not have to impose herself to the crowd. She comes in very feminine, yet the strength of drawing the crowd's attention is intact. It's the MAGIC of Shalani's way of hosting.
I am hoping that with this new face on local television and a new style of hosting would eventually change the facade of the present excrutiating way of hosting done by many of our celebrities on local T.V.

Zero Waste; Is it Possible?
Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to work with a very respected person (BG-VNC) on a concept called Zero Waste. It opened my eyes to the truth: First, that our present Earth is really suffering from the drastic effects of garbage disposal made by man, from toxic chemicals and heavy metals now incorporated in the air we breath and food we intake without us knowing it. Second, that WE CAN STILL DO SOMETHING TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM. It is just a matter of COOPERATION, SELF-DISCIPLINE AND CONSCIOUSNESS OF OUR ACTS. But no matter what we do, there would be garbage which we cannot recycle and reuse.
According to "Greenpeace", PVC's in construction leads the pact of non-recyclable/non-biodegradable materials, such as cable/wire insulation, window frames, doors, walls, paneling, water and wastewater pipes. Other PVC's come from home products, consumer articles, office, car industry and hospital. Completing the line of non-recyclable/non-biodegradable materials are imitation leather, garden hose and furniture.
Many countries around the world are aiming for zero waste management but as of press time, only 80% of garbage can be re-used and recycled. The remaining 20% are dumped on landfills or burned in incinerators. Two processes which are both unhealthy and unstable. Landfills emits methane gas while incinerators emits dioxins, all considered as the most dangerous greenhouse gases.
BG-VNC is working on a concept which would address the 20% non-recyclable/non-biodegradable garbage problem in coordination with Universidad de Zamboanga. If successful, it will make the Philippines, particularly Zamboanga/Ipil the lead local government unit to address the problem.
This project, which I'm most thankful to have taken a little part of, brings hope to this ailing Earth we live in.

Latest Tsunami that Hit Indonesia
Latest Indonesia Tsunami; A Thought to Ponder
Indonesia, as it is lying in the seismically active "Pacific Ring of Fire," a series of fault lines stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia, usually encounters earthquake which could trigger tsunami.
Indonesia had been hugging the headlines few years back, and now again, the headlines are all about the tragedy that had just struck the place. Hundreds are missing, fatalities are rising and the number of injured nationals and tourists is increasing.
For us who are not from Indonesia could only watch the tragedy through all the social networks and the broadcast media and be one with them in prayers for the rescue of those who are struggling for one's dear life and those who lost their relatives and friends.
Calamaties and/or catastrophes such us this can still result to something positive. It is on these times that humans are moved to helping other people. It is on these times that you would see people, from all walks of life, rich or poor, try to contribute something to alleviate the lives of those who are severely affected. Those who has the means extend financial support, while those with almost none, just share the most valuable thing of all - Prayers.
For those who are affected, who lost a family or friend, it is most important to think that these things happen for a reason. As such, painful as it is, we just have to accept the loss and leave it up to the Creator. But this does not mean that we are left with no recourse. Other calamities are triggered by man's abuse to nature.
This we can do something. From the simplest act of recycling our garbage, we are actually contributing for the preservation of our one and only place to live in - EARTH. With each one doing such, it would result to a tremendous change for the betterment of mankind.
IT IS TIME TO DO OUR PART.

Life after the Bar Exam; A seemingly relax life...
A year ago, my best friend Connie urged me to have this blog. It was a welcome respite. However my schedule didn't allow. I was wallowing much with my law books. We were on our fourth year in law school then.
After graduation, we were into a more tedious schedule and routine - the Bar Review and unto the Bar Exams last September 2010.
After the grueling six months review and bar exam, I own my time now. Of course work is there, but after work, life is simple... time for my son and hubby. Relax so to say. Hence, blog time. Expect more posts from me, about Life, Love and law maybe.
